SmartMist commissioned by Exeter City Council. We were approached by Randall Simmonds, a large construction company working on a UK first project in Exeter. The enquiry was for sauna suppression system to be installed within a state-of-the-art Passivehaus leisure facility. The system was required to cover three separate sauna rooms within the same area in the most efficient, most effective way possible.

We spent some time getting to understand the requirements of a Passivhaus build, the limitations of building penetrations and the general project limitations and our highly skilled design team found a solution. As time was a pressing factor, we completed a lot of this stage remotely, having conversations with different members of the on-site teams and fully reviewing the specification and design documents we were issued as part of the original tender.

Residential space in London is constantly in demand, so when you have an opportunity to maximise your developments and convert your property into something such as an HMO, it is hard to see the negatives. With that being said, new rules and regulations mean that in some cases, you would be required to add additional protection measures, such as interlinked fire alarm systems, 30- or 60-minute fire rated doors and supplementary fire suppression systems to ensure adequate protection.

Smartmist Systems is a leading provider of fire suppression systems, specialising in protecting commercial kitchens. One of their recent projects involved installing a kitchen fire suppression system for Gurdwara Sikh Sangat, a Sikh temple located in London. The installation was designed to protect the temple’s kitchen and dining area from potential fires and ensure the safety of its patrons.

The watermist system utilises the Fire Trace technology, along with the knowledge and experience of our design and development teams, to provide a fast-acting system, linked to the main fire alarm system in the building, which allows for rapid fire suppression should the time come.

Using a high-temperature bulb arrangement within the sauna to prevent false activation, the wet system sits armed and ready should it need to be utilised. A combination of technology at the cylinder end allow for careful and controlled evacuation signals to be output from the house fire alarm system, and maximise the safety of all the patrons of the gym at any time of the day!

Health and wellbeing is key when travelling, and having a local facility open for guest use just enhances this further. Being able to return to your accommodation after a long day of travelling or hours of back-to-back meetings or conferences can be tiring, so it is also key to be able to relax.

Misting Solutions have successfully installed two fire suppression systems into the 4* Vale Resort in Glamorgan, training home of the British and Irish Lions!

The specialist fire suppression systems installed into this specific resort was based on the high-risk sauna areas in both prestigious gym areas. With such a high risk being posed by saunas in today’s gyms, it is vital that appropriate suppression systems are installed to provide maximum protection and eliminate the risk of fire spread from the source.

The Misting Solutions system installed is perfect, and has been specifically designed to combat the risk; a high-temperature bulb has been utilised to ensure that the ambient temperatures within the saunas will not trigger any false alarm or activation, eliminating unnecessary downtime and disruption among the resorts guests.

The unit is also compact enough to pose no hazard to the general public; safely enclosed behind a custom built enclosure, there are no bulky cylinders with a large weight demand. This risk can be combatted by a single pump-d.

We successfully installed our cutting-edge water mist suppression system at a unique Cornwall holiday retreat, complete with a restaurant, just in time for its reopening following the relaxation of lockdown restrictions. This installation came with its own set of captivating challenges, as the entire premises were set aboard a picturesque French barge.

Our client embarked on a significant home development project in Wimbledon, transforming their loft, previously used for storage, into a fully functional living space with an en-suite bathroom.

While the Building Control Officers had approved the development, they required the installation of a mist system for enhanced fire safety. Familiar with SmartMist's reputation and quality of work through previous installations, they recommended our system to the homeowner.

Our client, an operator of three holiday homes primarily rented through Airbnb, expressed a strong desire to integrate advanced fire safety measures into their properties. This initiative was particularly timely, as the UK Government had introduced new fire safety regulations for holiday lets in October 2023.

SmartMist was tasked with retrofitting a sprinkler system into a newly constructed apartment block in Bristol following late-stage requirements from building control. This intervention was necessary to provide a compliant means of escape and to ensure the building met the updated fire safety regulations, specifically BS 9991.

SmartMist delivered a specialist waste recycling fire suppression solution for AB Waste, combining advanced video flame detection with an automatic water mist fire suppression system. Designed for high-risk waste processing environments, the system provides continuous monitoring and rapid response when fire is detected, helping to suppress flames before they can spread. A 30,000-litre water tank with specialist fire additive provides a dedicated on-site supply, strengthening fire protection across AB Waste’s facilities and reducing risk to staff, equipment and operations.

National services are often taken for granted, without thinking about the considerable investment into businesses and infrastructure that goes on behind the scenes.

Everyday processes are often assumed to just work; however, they are often driven by large, expensive pieces if machinery that require a lot of configuration, maintenance and monitoring. Not to mention the initial expense of the machinery, and the costs associated if it becomes damaged.

The waste and recycling sector is amongst the most active sectors in Europe, with a value of over £30bn in 2020. However, in recent years with increased production and disposal of electronics, there are a number of high-risk areas that can have drastic knock-on effects within large plants across the UK.

One particular area of risk is fires caused by batteries which have been incorrectly disposed of in normal waste methods, rather than using correct e-waste recycling methods across the UK.

These fires start when batteries fall from waste conveyor belts and get caught in the roller bars underneath, often getting crushed, sparking, exploding and carrying a huge fire risk into general machinery spaces and along conveyors.

In a significant refurbishment project, a prestigious private hospital in St Johns Wood upgraded its critical infrastructure, including the installation of a new diesel generator. SmartMist was chosen to equip the generator with a state-of-the-art water mist fire suppression system, ensuring the highest level of fire safety for the hospital’s crucial power source.

In an ambitious expansion project, a popular gourmet burger chain on Kensington High Street extended their restaurant into the next-door property. This extension included a significant kitchen enlargement. SmartMist was selected to overhaul and upgrade the fire suppression system to ensure optimal safety in the expanded space.

In 2023, a large private developer faced challenges adapting to the new fire safety regulations for underground car parks in the UK. This case study details how SmartMist assisted them in implementing an innovative fire suppression solution in their new apartment complex in Tower Hamlets, focusing on the installation of a high-pressure mist system in the complex's underground car park.

In 2023, an academy in Telford faced significant pressure from the local education authority to enhance its fire protection measures following a small electrical fire in the music hall. This case study details how SmartMist provided a robust fire suppression solution, ensuring the safety of students and staff and preventing future incidents.

SmartMist was engaged to install a mist suppression system in a converted warehouse that had been vacant for over eight years. The end client is a prominent serviced office provider, and our partnership with the M&E contractor, known for its reliability and quality, ensured a seamless collaboration.

The project took place over the summer of 2024 and lasted ve weeks, with an average of four staff members on site.

In 2023, a key project in downtown Manchester involved upgrading fire safety in a large residential complex. SmartMist was chosen for its expertise in fire protection, specifically for the installation of advanced mist systems in all apartment units.

This development, aimed at the sales market, required a fire safety system that would not only provide exceptional protection but also appeal to potential buyers. Each of the six apartments was to be equipped with six mist heads and an individual pump, offering a complete fire suppression solution.
